It doesn't really matter whether Superior Court judges are "liberal" or "conservative." They all have to dance to the tune of the Court of Appeals. THAT is what determines, in the end, how Superior Court judges rule or sentence in their cases. The real question you should be asking is, do the Court of Appeal judges have enough courtroom experience to complement their legal expertise in making decisions. You really need both. Thanks for the opportunity.
Judge J. Kenneth Mangum is one of the most caring and helpful judges on the bench.
He is a strong advocate for the anti-pornography league and fights hard for children's rights. He knows the law and he knows how to apply it for people.
I don't know if he's a Republican or Democrat - but, I know he's a good man with a genuine heart for doing the right thing. Given his legal credentials, that's enough for me to rate him very high.

I seriously question the depth of the research here. Here is one example: You state that Randy Warner was a member of the Arizona association of Defense Counsel, but don't seem to know that this is an association of CIVIL defense counsel, who represent defendants sued by trial lawyers. Unless you are anti-business, this is a sign of conservative leanings, but liberal leanings.
And another example: Paul McMurdie is a liberal? Are you kidding? He was the chief advocate for the prosecution in death cases for over a decade.
Thanks for the additional info on the Maricopa County Superior Court Judges. My wife & I had already reviewed,(in detail) all of the info provided in the Publicity Pamphlet mailed to our home by the Secretary of State's office. We used several criteria/s to make our decisions - The main one was how do they rate in the INTEGRITY evaluations. We agreed on most of your assestments, with a few exceptions-BUT, how did Crane McClennen show up as "neutral ?
1. Only 10 of 29 Commissioners voted "meets standards"
2.Legal ability 89%
3.Integrity 84% ?
4.Communication Skills 78%
5.Judicial Temperment 60%
6.Administrative Performance 70%
Kinda takes the credibility
out of the entire process !

The site presents great information about judges in Arizona. The information provided by the Publicity Pamphlet is terrible inadequate. The Publicity Pamphlet provides a few vague number that make all the judges look good and ensures their reelection

This is great. I do have to say, I have been before Judge Ballinger many times in the last 2 years and he is an exceptional judge. He is very fair and does a good job of making fair rulings based on the law and does not like games or shenannigans in his court. Vote to keep him on the bench, we need many more judges with as much integrity as judge Ballinger.
P.S. He presided over my custody case in family court. Sadly, in the middle of my case he got rotated to the civil bench where I'm sure he is doing a great job as well. But on that note, he was replaced by Judge Hyatt and she too is an outstanding judge.
I'm a little confused as to how you managed to rank so many of the judges in the "red" category, but provided no information. It would appear that merely being appointed by Napolitano garners one a negative rating on your blog. Assuming you want your judges to display appropriate impartiality and judge each case on its merits, don't you think it's wise to extend the same courtesy when ranking the judges?

This appears to be a very right-leaning blog. It's funny how most of the judges, if they are a Republican, have a favorable rating, and if they are a Democrat, have a negative rating. Why don't you provide more information on WHY the judges have been given the ratings they've been given?

Thank you for an informative review. The Judicial Performance Review in the Publicity Pamphlet can be very misleading regarding the performance of a Judge. Very few litigants who go before a Judge, fill out the surveys they are given and return them. I'll use Presiding Family Court Judge, Colleen McNally, as an example, 189 surveys were distributed to litigants and only 15 surveys were returned. Those numbers do not accurately reflect what her true performance could be. I've been told Judge McNally is insensitive to woman's issues often being bias towards the man. She also does not fight for children's rights. Where is her integrity? I've heard several stories from prior litigants who have been before Judge McNally say that if you do anything to get on her bad side you can say good-bye to your case even if you are in the right. Please educate yourself and if you have not heard anything about a particular Judge, do not vote for the Judge at all. The courts need to be changed!

QUESTION: You gave Craig Blakey a rating of "10" claiming he is a "solid conservative", but according to two other websites (including the netroots one you refer to several times and http://www.azconservative.org/2008_Elections.htm) he actually leans to the liberal side and is supported by the liberal vote. There's not a lot of info out there to help figure out a wise vote. More information of Judge Blakey's views would be appreciated. Otherwise it is difficult to give this research credibility. Thank you for your hard work!

My mom taught me to never keep any judge for more than one term. They ALL get too power hungry. To keep it fair and unbiased, I believe I'll stick to that rule, my mama knows best.
This website is very helpful in making an informed decision; however, I would like to see more about the views of all the judges. I think knowing if a judge is considered liberal or conservative is of the utmost importance. Liberal judges tend to be more likely to legislate from the bench and conservatives tend to be more likely to stick with the letter of the law and the Constitution. I would also like to see their views on issues such as abortion (pro-life vs. pro-choice). How about their views on gun control. These are all very important to most voters on either side of the political spectrum. This information will allow voters to make informed decisions based on their own opinions of the issues.
I just received this web site today. Unfortunately we voted by absentee ballot last week. I just hope I can remember this website when it's time to vote again.
Thanks for putting this information together. I like to be somewhat informed on who is on the ballot and I had a hard time finding anything else listing how they tend to lean in their rulings.

My best friend had Bruce Cohen as her lawyer just before he was picked as a judge. He was obviously well-respected by judges and attorneys alike and conducted himself in an admirable manner. He showed genuine concern for both sides of the issue even as an attorney. I am extremely conservative and I would trust this man to be fair and principled.
This site is ridiculous. You are ignorant people who have nothing better to do than try to take someone's job away. Are you in each of these jugde's courtroom every single day? Do you see the countless amount of hours they put into their cases, for every single one? No you don't. So before you decide to put a "red" mark on a judge you know nothing about, you should visit their court every single day of every single year. It's funny that the people above who say "this site is amazing!" are really just ignorant people who rely on you to give them false information. If you want to know about a certain judge, look up court records, not an ill-informed blog that can't seem to get its facts straight.
I see that you have already labeled Judge Hugh Hegyi as liberal. He was my judge in family court and what I do know about him is that HE BARELY LISTENED TO ANY OF THE DETAILS IN COURT,WAS NOT CONCERNED ABOUT THE WELFARE OF MY CHILDREN, AND MADE DEVASTATING DECISIONS THAT WILL NEGATIVELY AFFECT MY CHILDREN FOR YEARS TO COME. I understand these judges are really busy in family courts, but if they are overwhelmed and can't keep up with doing an adequate job, they should have enough chutzpah to complain that they cannot do their job well with the amount of cases they have been assigned. I would have given anything to have a jury of my peers listen and make the decision. These judges need to realize that they are making crucial decisions that can greatly affect how a child's life turns out. J. Kenneth Mangum is an excellent judge deserving of praise. I am an attorney and do some work as a Pro Tem Judge. I have seen the work of hundreds on the bench and have seen many examples; both good and bad. Judge Mangum is one of the few that studies everything that is coming before him very carefully. You can't put anything past him, and yet he is one of the kindest people you will ever meet. We need more like him serving our judiciary!
Two weeks before she was killed, Dawn Axsom pleaded with Judge Jose Padilla of Maricopa County Superior Court to let her leave Arizona with her son because she feared Gabriel Schwartz, the toddler's father, would harm her or their boy.
Padilla denied the 26-year-old's request and ordered the pair to attend parental counseling together.
Axsom's body was found in her Peoria residence Friday. Police also found the bodies of Schwartz, 28, and Linda Braden, 56, Axsom's mother.
Schwartz is suspected of shooting and killing both women before turning the gun on himself.
I would like to see a site that is less subjective and more statistically oriented. Here is what would be helpful to me: a listing of each judge, attorney/ law firm for plaintiff and defendants, decision for and against statistics by Plaintiff/Defendant, number of cases appealed and number of appeals affirmed, reversed, etc link to cases presided over by judge.

I just had a hearing Tuesday with a new Mesa Superior Court commissioner, Alysson Abe, I believe her name is spelled. She had her mind made up before I ever entered her court room that she was going to have me arrested for back owed child support, and I can only assume this was due to 'behind the bench pressure', applied from the opposing party's attorney, due to the fact that Abe was not so irrationally disposed against me in preceedings prior! She had many options at her disposal on Tuesday to address both parties concerns and needs without using such a punitive measure. She chose to punish me with such acrimony there were gasps in the courtroom. She entered her ruling under the ruse that she felt this was 'in the best interest' of my children, yet her actions cost me a very hard-won and lucrative internship I had just started the day before, which would have caught me up in my child support by summer's end! How she or anyone with the facts of both sides of this case in front of them, would consider her ruling 'in the best interests' of my children is the question every Arizona Father deserves an answer to! Then to learn that there is little that one in this State can do to seek redress for such financial and career damage from a malicious judge's ruling...that is the most bitter pill of all! In this economy, to cost a man his job, any job, which he'd fought for three months to obtain, under the guise of it being what is 'best' for his children...ought to be a punishable offense - no matter WHO is responsible!! This woman wearing a judges costume, actually leaned forward on the bench, narrowed her eyes and hissed at me, as I countered that I would lose my job if she jailed me, "You should have thought of that before you entered this courtroom!" With such palpable contempt of her 'subjects' as it were, evidenced by her utter disregard and disdain of REALITY, I am certain Abe's future record and rulings will bring much shame upon this State, if not law-suits!
Hugh Hegyi is an awful judge. He was not fair and did not listen. Was downright rude and nasty. I walked out of the courtroom feeling sick to my stomach and vowed to never step foot in another courtroom where he is the judge.
Judge Brain Hauser (who is up for re-election this year) is not a great choice. He makes decisions based on one side and ignores ethical issues.
We get so little information on the Judges we are to vote on. I appreciate this site and wish more information could be provided. Please get the word out about this site to the public.

This is a very unbias set of data, you can tell because all the Democrats should be voted out and Republicans are okay. Good job, lol.

Thanks for making it amazingly easy to spot the extreme right wing conservative judges!!! Hopefully they'll be looking for another job soon.
